From Faith Into Action

The 2008 conference of Quakers in Criminal Justice was held at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham from 22 to 24 February 2008.

Before we act it is important to look within and examine our motivation. Initially, we may be prompted by anger, guilt or fear – we need help to transform these into love. The road of transformation is not easy; worship and discipleship will show us the way. Only then will we become truly open to the guidance of the Spirit and our work will become love in action……
Through quiet, listening prayer we can discover what is required of us.

The conference set out to explore the key message of the 2007 BYM epistle: showing our love and faith in action, with a focus  on the spiritual and practical dimensions of transforming our faith into action in the challenging arena of the criminal justice system. Speakers included Juliet Lyon of the Prison Reform Trust and Mike Rose of the St Giles Trust.

The experience was enhanced by an exhibition of the Forgiveness Project, with challenging and inspiring stories; Marina Cantacuzino, the Director of the Project, was also a key-note speaker, opening up the Dynamics of Understanding. Workshops included Alternatives to Violence, the Camden Garden Centre project and Escaping Victimhood.
